Pakistan’s first anti-smog tower installed in Lahore
Pakistan’s first anti-smog tower has been installed in Lahore to tackle increasing air pollution.
The Environmental Protection Department has installed the tower developed in partnership with a private company.
The tower marks a significant step in improving the air quality in Lahore.
The tower, situated in Mehmood Booti, has the ability to filter 50,000 cubic metres of air every hour and purify 1.2 million cubic metres daily.
The anti-smog tower operates using electrostatic technology to attract and eliminate harmful pollutants from the atmosphere. The structure of the tower is manufactured in Pakistan by an Islamabad-based company.
Imran Hamid Sheikh, Director General of the Environment Department, said that waste dumping sites and industrial emissions are key contributors to pollution in the city.
The official stressed the necessity of such initiatives to curb harmful air quality levels.
He said that the Punjab government is conducting a 15-day trial of the tower at no expense and added that in case the results prove effective, additional towers will be errected in other parts of Lahore.
According to him, the trial could pave the way for innovative solutions to the rising smog issue in Pakistan.
