iPhones to get satellite texting with Starlink

29 January, 2025 14:55

Apple is all set to bring the Starlink network to iPhone, says a report published by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

The report added that it is claimed to work similarly to the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature on iPhone, which lets users get in touch with emergency services when they do not have a data or Wi-Fi connectivity.

The California-based technology firm has partnered with Elon Musk’s SpaceX that has developed the Starlink satellite network, along with a US telecommunications provider to commence its testing in beta.

In 2020, the tech giant had introduced the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature with the iPhone 14 models in Canada and the US. It offered cellular connectivity by using Globalstar’s 24 satellite in low-earth orbit. Apple explains, the Starlink partnership will bring the same functionality too.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in a report, highlighted it will arrive as an alternative to the company’s in-house service and will be limited to the US.

The report further said that initially it will only enable texting services but will also be expanded to offer data and voice calls in the future.

Apple has partnered with T-Mobile and the service is currently available in beta.
