President files case against prime minister

Iraq’s president has filed a lawsuit against Prime Minister Mohammad Shi’a al-Sudani for non-payment of salaries to government employees in the Kurdistan Autonomous Region.
President Abdul Latif Rashid filed a lawsuit against Al-Sudani and Finance Minister Taif Sami last month, but federal adviser Hawari Taufiq announced it recently.
The case, filed in an Iraqi court, seeks an urgent order to ensure payment of salaries in Kurdistan despite the ongoing financial disputes between Baghdad and the regional capital Erbil.
Federal Adviser Hawari Taufiq said the announcement of the prosecution against the prime minister was due to protests in Kurdistan’s second-largest city and the president’s hometown of Sulaimaniyah over non-payment of salaries.
Iraq’s public sector is full of inefficiencies and corruption, while analysts say there have long been differences between the prime minister and the president.
