17 March, 2025 20:02

Born on July 14, 1988, in Dublin, Ireland, Conor McGregor grew up in Crumlin, a working-class suburb.

Raised by his father, Tony, a taxi driver, and his mother, Margaret, a laundry worker, McGregor had an early passion for sports. As a child, he played football (soccer), but at age 12, he took up boxing at Crumlin Boxing Club, where his talent quickly became evident.

McGregor later expanded his training to kickboxing and mixed martial arts (MMA), joining Straight Blast Gym Ireland under the guidance of coach John Kavanagh. Despite his parents’ concerns about his career prospects, he briefly trained as a plumber before abandoning the trade to pursue MMA full-time.

MMA Career: From Local Fighter to UFC Superstar

McGregor’s professional MMA career began in 2008, competing in the lightweight and featherweight divisions. Over the next four years, he built a reputation for his striking ability and knockout power, suffering only two losses. In 2011, he knocked out an opponent in just four seconds, cementing his reputation as a rising star.

By 2012, McGregor had won both the featherweight and lightweight titles in Cage Warriors Fighting Championship (CWFC), making him a double champion. His success caught the attention of UFC President Dana White, who signed him in early 2013.

In his UFC debut in April 2013, McGregor defeated Marcus Brimage by technical knockout in just 67 seconds. His explosive performances, combined with his brash personality, made him one of the most talked-about fighters in the sport.

UFC Championship Wins and Notable Fights

Despite suffering a torn ACL in 2013, McGregor continued his winning streak. In July 2015, he won the interim UFC Featherweight Championship by defeating Chad Mendes. Later that year, he made history by knocking out José Aldo in just 13 seconds—the fastest title fight knockout in UFC history—to become the undisputed Featherweight Champion.

In March 2016, McGregor faced his first major setback in the UFC, losing to Nate Diaz via submission in a welterweight bout. However, in a rematch five months later, McGregor won by majority decision.

His biggest career milestone came in November 2016 when he knocked out Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC Lightweight Championship. This victory made him the first fighter in UFC history to hold two titles simultaneously.

The Mayweather Boxing Match

In August 2017, McGregor took on undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a highly publicized boxing match. Although he lost via technical knockout in the 10th round, the fight was competitive, and McGregor reportedly earned around $130 million from the bout.

Later UFC Fights and Retirement Announcements

After being stripped of his UFC titles due to inactivity, McGregor returned in 2018 to challenge Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight championship. The fight was overshadowed by pre-fight trash talk and post-fight chaos, with Nurmagomedov jumping into the crowd to fight McGregor’s team after his victory.

McGregor announced his retirement multiple times but returned in 2020, knocking out Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in just 40 seconds. However, his 2021 comeback against Dustin Poirier ended in two consecutive losses—the second due to a broken tibia.

After years of recovery, McGregor planned a return fight against Michael Chandler in June 2024, but the bout was canceled due to injury.

Controversies and Legal Issues

McGregor’s larger-than-life persona has led to numerous legal troubles. In 2018, he was arrested for attacking a UFC bus carrying Khabib Nurmagomedov, injuring several fighters. He later pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and performed community service.

In 2021, a civil lawsuit found McGregor liable for a 2018 sexual assault case, resulting in a €248,000 ($257,000) damages payment.

McGregor has also drawn criticism for his political statements, particularly his controversial views on Irish immigration.

Business Ventures and Personal Life

Despite his controversies, McGregor has built a successful business empire. In 2018, he launched Proper No. Twelve whiskey, later selling his majority stake for $150 million. He has also invested in bars, fitness programs (McGregor FAST), and sponsorship deals.

McGregor is engaged to longtime partner Dee Devlin, with whom he has four children. In 2024, he made his acting debut in the Road House remake, starring alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.

Legacy

McGregor’s impact on MMA is undeniable. He helped bring mainstream attention to the sport, set UFC records, and became one of the highest-paid athletes in the world. Whether in the octagon, boxing ring, or business world, his influence continues—even if controversy follows wherever he goes.
