Who was Eddie Jordan? Former F1 team owner passes away

Eddie Jordan was an Irish businessman, television personality and former motorsport team owner. Born in Dublin, Jordan worked first at the Bank of Ireland. He won the Irish Kart Championship in 1971 and moved to Formula Ford in 1974.

Renowned former Formula 1 team owner Eddie Jordan has passed away at the age of 76. The Irish businessman, who founded and led Jordan Grand Prix from 1991 to 2005, died peacefully in Cape Town on March 20, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Jordan, a former shareholder of Celtic Football Club, had publicly disclosed last year that he was battling an aggressive form of cancer, which had spread to his spine and pelvis.

His family released a heartfelt statement, saying, “EJ brought an abundance of charisma, energy, and Irish charm wherever he went. His absence leaves a huge void, but we cherish the memories he gave us.”

During his time in Formula 1, Jordan’s team secured four victories, including the memorable 1998 Belgian Grand Prix, where Damon Hill and Ralf Schumacher finished first and second. Notably, Michael Schumacher made his F1 debut with Jordan in 1991 before going on to win seven world titles.

After selling his team in 2005, Jordan remained involved in the sport as a television pundit and played a pivotal role in managing legendary car designer Adrian Newey. Recently, he facilitated Newey’s transition from Red Bull to Aston Martin.

Beyond motorsport, Jordan led a consortium that rescued rugby club London Irish from administration.

Tributes poured in from the F1 community, with F1 President Stefano Domenicali expressing deep sorrow, stating, “Eddie was a key figure in the sport, bringing energy and passion. He will be dearly missed.”

Aston Martin team principal Andy Cowell also paid homage, calling Jordan “a visionary and a true motorsport icon.”

Eddie Jordan’s legacy in Formula 1 and beyond will be remembered for generations to come.
