Claire Austin tragically dies after she ran through glass door at her unit
Sydney’s eastern suburb of Randwick was shaken over the weekend by the tragic death of Claire Austin, a 38-year-old marketing executive who sustained fatal injuries after running through a glass door in her top-floor apartment.
The incident happened just after 7:30am on Saturday, when Claire Austin reportedly severed her arm by crashing into an internal glass door. She was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital by paramedics after a concerned neighbor called Triple Zero. Despite being placed on life support, she passed away three days later.
Claire’s boyfriend, 44-year-old recruitment executive Lee Loughlin, told police they had been arguing when she suddenly ran through the door. He has cooperated with authorities and was temporarily admitted to a mental health facility. NSW Police confirmed:
“He has since been released without charge and no arrests have been made at this time.”
Investigations are ongoing.
A young local witness, just 11 years old, shared chilling details about the morning of the tragedy. With his mother’s permission to speak, he recalled hearing a loud argument:
“It sounded way worse… They both sounded (like) something wrong would happen.”
He said he heard Claire yelling, followed by a loud crash and then silence, before hearing a man scream,
“Somebody help me,” repeatedly.
The boy’s father was so alarmed he stepped outside to check on the commotion. Emergency services arrived shortly after.
On Wednesday, a bouquet of flowers appeared at the apartment complex, along with a heart-wrenching note:
“I am so sorry that this happened to you, especially on the shores of a foreign country.”
Originally from the UK, Claire Austin had been living in Australia for a decade. Her family flew in from the UK after learning she wouldn’t survive her injuries, arriving in Sydney just hours before her passing.
NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Peter Thurtell confirmed the case is being treated as a criminal matter.
“This is a tragic loss of life and we are determined to work out exactly what happened,” he said.
Authorities have since launched Strike Force Lyndoch to fully investigate the circumstances surrounding Claire Austin’s untimely death.
