Iran Calls on BRICS to Defend International Law, Expand Disaster Management Cooperation

Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni has called on BRICS member states to adopt a united stance in defense of international law, saying such solidarity would significantly strengthen global peace and security. Speaking at the BRICS Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Disaster Management in New Delhi, Momeni linked his appeal to what he described as recent U.S.-Israeli aggression against Iran, arguing that attacks on civilian infrastructure and violations of territorial integrity breach the UN Charter and international legal principles.

Referring to strikes on infrastructure, power plants, residential areas, schools, and hospitals, Momeni said such actions and the resulting civilian casualties violate international law. He urged BRICS nations to collectively oppose aggression, violations of national sovereignty, attacks on civilians, and the destruction of critical infrastructure, adding that a unified message from the bloc would reinforce respect for multilateralism and the international legal order.

Addressing disaster risk reduction, Momeni said climate change, natural disasters, pandemics, and vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure are shared global challenges that require collective action. He said Iran is ready to share its experience in responding to earthquakes, floods, droughts, storms, and other natural hazards, proposing greater cooperation through joint action plans, specialized training, technical exchanges, and disaster-response exercises. Momeni added that Iran is prepared to serve as an active and reliable partner within BRICS, emphasizing that investing in disaster prevention is more effective and less costly than post-crisis recovery.
