Trump Wants an Ocean Named After Himself, but Google CEO Says No!

22 October, 2026 12:27

US President Donald Trump has said that Google CEO Sundar Pichai rejected his idea of renaming the Atlantic Ocean “Trump Ocean.”

Speaking at a Republican election rally in South Carolina on October 21, Trump said he had contacted Pichai to ask whether the name of the Atlantic Ocean could be changed on Google Maps.

According to Trump, Pichai responded that he could not make the change because oceans are connected to many countries, making their names different from those of other geographical locations.

Trump shared the conversation with the audience and suggested that he might drop the idea and leave the ocean’s current name unchanged.

Trump’s Previous Renaming Efforts

Trump’s latest comments follow his earlier efforts to change geographical names. During his second term, he ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be called the “Gulf of America” in official US government use.

Google Maps reflected the change for users in the United States, while the name displayed in other countries varied.

Trump has also previously discussed renaming the Atlantic Ocean or the Pacific Ocean after himself or the United States. At a rally in Georgia on October 16, he said he had asked Google about the possibility of calling one of the oceans “Trump Ocean.”

He later said he was joking, although he did not completely dismiss the idea.

Can Google Change an Ocean’s Name?

Google Maps displays geographical names based on official naming decisions, local rules and other relevant factors. However, Google does not have the authority to officially rename an international ocean worldwide.

The Atlantic Ocean borders several countries and continents, so a change on a digital map would not automatically change its internationally recognised name.

Google and Sundar Pichai have not independently confirmed the specific conversation described by Trump. Therefore, the claim that Pichai rejected the request is based on the president’s account.

For now, the Atlantic Ocean has not been renamed “Trump Ocean,” and no confirmed decision to change its name on Google Maps has been announced.
