Abby Treece Goes Viral After Awkward Gen Z Encounter at Black-Tie Event
A 31-year-old woman, Abby Treece from the U.S., became a TikTok sensation after an unexpected fashion moment at a wedding.
She attended a black-tie wedding wearing a stylish strapless floral maxi dress with a matching scarf around her neck — only to discover another guest, a younger Gen Z woman, wearing the exact same dress just a few feet away.
Instead of feeling awkward, Abby took it in stride. In her video — which has over a million likes — she joked, “I was embarrassed for a second until I realized I, a 31-year-old, am matching a cool young Gen Z at this wedding.” She also thanked the Australian brand Peppermayo for making her feel “young and cool.”
Abby later told the media that she actually approached the younger woman, and they complimented each other’s style. People in the comments praised Abby, calling her look beautiful and trendy.
However, not everyone was positive. Some viewers criticized the scarf she wore, saying it looked like a dupatta — a traditional South Asian accessory.
They accused her of cultural appropriation, asking why elements of their culture were being turned into fashion trends.
In response, Abby said she’s grateful to learn more about the cultural significance of the dupatta but felt that some of the criticism was too harsh and personal.
Still, she says she’s open to growing from the experience and is focusing on the positive feedback.
