Who was Harsimrat Randhawa? Indian college student shot dead in Canada
In a tragic incident, 21-year-old Indian student Harsimrat Randhawa was fatally shot while waiting at a bus stop in Hamilton, Canada, on her way to work.
According to Hamilton Police, Randhawa was an “innocent bystander” who was struck by a stray bullet during a shooting between occupants of two vehicles. The incident occurred around 7:30 PM local time near Upper James and South Bend Road.
Police arrived to find Randhawa with a gunshot wound to the chest. She was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage and determined that a passenger in a black car fired shots at a white sedan. Both vehicles fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
Some bullets also entered a nearby home, narrowly missing residents who were watching TV just a few feet away. Fortunately, no one inside was injured.
The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed deep sorrow over Randhawa’s death in a social media post, stating: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Indian student Harsimrat Randhawa… She was an innocent victim, fatally struck by a stray bullet. A homicide investigation is underway. We are in close contact with her family and providing all necessary assistance.”
Hamilton Police have urged anyone with dashcam footage or security camera recordings from the area between 7:15 PM and 7:45 PM to come forward to aid the investigation.
Harsimrat Randhawa was a student at Mohawk College in Hamilton. Her sudden death has sent shockwaves through the Indian student community in Canada, raising concerns over rising gun violence in the region.
Authorities are working to determine the motive behind the shooting, but early indications suggest it may have been a targeted attack unrelated to Randhawa.
