Pezeshkian Says US Has No Legal Right to Impose Sanctions on Iran

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said the United States has no legal or international authority to impose sanctions on Iran, stressing that Tehran and Moscow can cooperate in confronting what he described as Washington’s unilateralism. Pezeshkian made the remarks during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. He thanked Moscow for its support for Iran and said major powers should not use their military and political strength to carry out aggression while disregarding international laws and established frameworks.

Pezeshkian described relations between Tehran and Moscow as strategic, saying the partnership extends beyond conventional bilateral ties. He emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between the two countries in addressing regional and international challenges. The Iranian president’s office said the meeting included a review of the latest developments in bilateral relations and discussions on ways to expand cooperation across various fields.

Putin expressed solidarity with the Iranian people amid the conflict involving the United States and Israel and said Moscow would continue its economic and trade relations with Tehran despite ongoing political and military tensions. He said relations between Russia and Iran were progressing at a “very steady pace” under their existing cooperation agreement. Both sides discussed strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation in economic, political and other areas.
