Pope Francis Passes away: Religious leader dies aged 88

Pope Francis has died at the age of 88, the Vatican has confirmed. He became pope in 2013 after Pope Benedict XVI stepped down.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced the news, saying, “With deep sorrow, I share that our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has passed away. He died at 7:35 AM this morning. He devoted his life to serving God and the Church, always standing up for the poor and those on the edges of society. We are thankful for his inspiring example and pray for his soul.”

Now that he has passed, the process to select a new pope — called the conclave — will begin within 15 to 20 days.

Health Struggles in Recent Years

Pope Francis had been dealing with serious health issues in the past few years. On February 14, he was admitted to the hospital with bronchitis. Soon after, he was diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs and received blood transfusions due to low platelet levels, which can be linked to anemia.

By February 22, his condition became critical due to breathing problems, and doctors later said he had early-stage kidney failure. People gathered in St. Peter’s Square and outside his hospital to pray and leave flowers.

On March 6, he shared an audio message thanking everyone for their prayers and support. He also made a brief appearance on Easter Sunday, even meeting US Vice President JD Vance the day before.

He stayed in the hospital for 38 days, finally going home on March 23. On the way back, he made a stop at his favorite basilica. Doctors said he would continue to rest, receive oxygen if needed, and take medications for a lung infection while also doing physical therapy to help with his recovery.
