Massive Sinkhole in Jackson Puts Residents at Risk – Driver nearly loses car TWICE

21 April, 2025 18:26

A dangerous sinkhole on Denver Street in North Jackson, Mississippi, is putting lives and property at risk. The huge hole has taken over nearly half the road, and residents are growing increasingly frustrated. Despite many reports to the city, the sinkhole remains open and unaddressed.

The pit is currently surrounded by traffic cones, but residents say that’s not enough. They fear someone could get seriously hurt or even killed if action isn’t taken soon.

Driver Nearly Falls In—Twice

Danial Hall, who lives right next to the sinkhole, shared a frightening experience. He has almost driven into the hole twice.

“Well, I mean, we have sewer gas and I almost drove into it twice,” Hall told local news station WLBT3. “Once last night, and yesterday morning I forgot about that. But somebody was riding in the car with me both times and warned me, so fortunately I didn’t drive into it.”

He added, “If you drive into it, your car’s gone. That’s the end of it.”

Hall said he just wants the city to fix the sewer lines and fill the hole. He’s also worried because other nearby roads are starting to collapse too. “That’s about to be our only way out of here,” he said.

Elderly Residents at Risk

Another neighbor, Calvin Giles, lives nearby in a home for the elderly. He moved into the area over a year ago and says the sinkhole has been there since before he arrived.

“I think it’s terrible that it hasn’t been fixed,” Giles said. “It’s a dangerous situation and we’ve been trying to get someone to come out and look at it and fix it.”

Giles is especially concerned about the older residents who live on the street. “Someone’s going to either drive into it or fall in. Or someone could be walking late at night. It’s just a dangerous spot.”

He said they’ve talked to multiple officials, but no real action has been taken.

City Promises Temporary Fix

Ward 5 Councilman Vernon Hartley responded to the concerns in a statement. “Because of the continual safety hazard, I’ve been told that the city may provide a temporary fix in the next three weeks,” he said.

Still, many locals believe three weeks is too long to wait for a situation this serious.

Ongoing Safety Concerns

Residents say they are tired of waiting and afraid something tragic could happen. The sinkhole has already made the street nearly unusable and is putting everyone at risk—especially elderly residents and drivers unfamiliar with the area.

People living nearby are demanding a faster response. Until something is done, the blocked-off pit remains a daily danger for anyone using Denver Street.
