Askole prepares to welcome international tourists amidst majestic mountain backdrop

25 April, 2025 23:49

Nestled at the base of the towering Karakoram Range, Askole village is set to host foreign tourists in the coming month, offering a gateway to some of the world’s most challenging and revered peaks, including K2, Broad Peak, and Gasherbrum I and II.

A Remote Village with Global Significance

Situated approximately 3,000 meters above sea level in the Shigar Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan, Askole is the last significant settlement before the wilderness of the high Karakorams begins. It serves as the starting point for expeditions to K2, the second-highest mountain in the world, and other notable peaks in the region.

Tourism Revival Post-Pandemic

The global pandemic had a severe impact on tourism in the region, leading to a significant decline in visitors. However, with the easing of travel restrictions and the resumption of international flights, Askole is witnessing a resurgence in tourism. Local businesses, including trekking agencies, porters, and guides, are preparing to cater to the influx of trekkers and mountaineers anticipated in the coming months.

Community Initiatives and Infrastructure Development

The local community, primarily the Balti people, is known for their hospitality and resilience. In recent years, there have been efforts to improve infrastructure and facilities to accommodate tourists, including the construction of basic lodgings and the provision of essential services. These developments aim to enhance the visitor experience while preserving the village’s cultural heritage.

Environmental and Cultural Preservation

While tourism brings economic benefits, it also poses challenges related to environmental conservation and cultural preservation. Local authorities and community leaders are working together to implement sustainable tourism practices that minimize ecological impact and respect the traditions and customs of the Balti people.

Looking Ahead

As Askole prepares to welcome international tourists, the village stands at the intersection of tradition and modernity. With its breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and the promise of adventure, Askole offers a unique and unforgettable experience for those seeking to explore the heart of the Karakoram Range.
