Violating Indus Waters Treaty imperils Indian security, warns FT

29 April, 2025 16:03

India’s unilateral decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty after the Pahalgam false flag operation has come under criticism internationally.

India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, which is a serious threat to regional security, reports the Financial Times.

It said the suspension of treaty could escalate water tensions between India and Pakistan.

According to the publication, India’s recent actions are expected to increase tensions over water security.

It further said that Delhi’s actions threaten long-term stability of Indus Waters Treaty, adding temporary suspension of agreement could have negative effects on both countries.

India and Pakistan should reconsider unilateral actions as environmental risks are increasing. India’s stance could lead to further instability in the region.

Unilateral actions against Pakistan are also detrimental to India’s water security. The Indus Waters Treaty has been the basis of peace despite past disputes, the Financial Times reported.
