Shashi Tharoor acknowledges Pakistan’s military strength

12 May, 2025 13:13

Indian opposition leader and Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor has acknowledged Pakistan’s formidable military capabilities and urged the Indian government to avoid pushing the region toward further military escalation.

Speaking in a recent television interview, Tharoor expressed concern about the potential consequences if tensions between the two nations were to intensify.

“Pakistan has a substantial military presence, and from what I’ve heard, they possess advanced weaponry,” Tharoor remarked. “It would be unwise for the Modi administration to pursue any further military adventures.”

A proponent of diplomacy and peace, Tharoor welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, describing it as a positive step that could prevent future conflicts. He noted that while restoring full diplomatic relations may take time, the ceasefire serves as an encouraging foundation for further dialogue.

Emphasizing the importance of human connections, Tharoor called for the two governments to facilitate reunions among families divided by the border. “I strongly support increased people-to-people interaction,” he stated. “Both countries should issue visas to help bridge the divide and foster mutual understanding.”
