Why Bangladeshi Actress Nusraat Faria Arrested at Dhaka Airport? What Are Charges Against Her?

19 May, 2025 11:07

Popular Bangladeshi actress Nusraat Faria has been detained at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in connection with an attempted murder case.

Faria, widely known for her portrayal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the biographical film Mujib: The Making of a Nation, was apprehended by authorities as she tried to board a flight to Thailand. Her name was flagged by immigration officials, leading to her arrest. She is one of 17 individuals implicated in a case linked to a violent incident during the anti-government protests in Dhaka last year.

According to The Dhaka Tribune, the charges against Faria are related to an alleged attack on a student in the Vatara area during the July 2024 protests, which were part of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement. Inspector Sujan Haque of Vatara Police Station confirmed her arrest, explaining, “Our team went to the airport after receiving information from Immigration Police. A few days ago, a court approved charges in an attempted murder case against her. She has now been arrested in connection with that case.”

Local news outlet Prothom Alo reported that Faria was detained earlier in the day at the immigration checkpoint.

Nusraat Faria gained fame with her 2015 debut in the film Aashiqui, alongside Ankush Hazra. She went on to star in several successful films, including Hero 420, Badsha – The Don, Premi O Premi, and Boss 2: Back to Rule. Her most notable role came in 2023, when she played Sheikh Hasina in Mujib: The Making of a Nation, a co-production between Bangladesh and India directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Shyam Benegal. The film, which tells the story of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founder of Bangladesh, starred Arifin Shuvoo in the lead role.

Reflecting on the opportunity to portray Sheikh Hasina, Nusraat Faria shared, “I felt like the luckiest person in my country. No one had ever portrayed her on screen before. Even if I never act again, this will always be the greatest achievement of my career.”

At this time, there has been no official statement from Faria or her representatives regarding the arrest.
