May 28 Declared Public Holiday in Pakistan for Youm-e-Takbeer

Pakistan Stock Exchange to Remain Closed on May 28 for Youm-e-Takbeer
The Government of Pakistan has officially declared Wednesday, May 28, 2025, a nationwide public holiday in honor of Youm-e-Takbeer, according to multiple national media outlets.
This significant day commemorates Pakistan’s historic nuclear tests conducted on May 28, 1998, in the Chagai district of Balochistan. The tests were conducted in response to India’s nuclear tests and marked Pakistan’s emergence as the seventh nuclear power in the world and the first Muslim nation to achieve nuclear deterrence.
A Day of National Pride
Youm-e-Takbeer, meaning “the day of greatness,” symbolizes Pakistan’s defense capability and is observed each year with great national pride. It reflects the country’s commitment to maintaining a strong, independent defense system.
A notification from the federal government confirmed that all government offices, including local councils and related departments, will be closed on May 28. This holiday was included in the list of general holidays back in December 2024.
Prime Minister’s Statement
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared Youm-e-Takbeer a public holiday to remind citizens of the unity shown by the nation during a crucial time in history.
In his official message last year, the Prime Minister said:
“May 28 is a reminder of the day when the entire nation came together to make Pakistan’s defense invincible. It is a symbol of national determination and resilience against external pressures.”
He emphasized that Pakistan’s nuclear tests were for peaceful purposes and to ensure national security, vowing that the integrity and sovereignty of the country would always be protected.
Historical Background
On May 28, 1998, Pakistan successfully conducted five nuclear tests in the remote hills of Chagai, just weeks after India carried out its own nuclear detonations. The tests marked a major turning point in South Asia’s strategic balance.
Since then, Youm-e-Takbeer has been celebrated annually to honor the scientists, armed forces, and leadership who made the achievement possible.
