Lemon prices soar amid hot weather
Lemon prices in Multan have seen a sharp and unexpected increase, reaching Rs800 per kilogram, causing frustration among residents during the ongoing heatwave.
Just a week ago, lemons were selling for Rs500 per kilo. Now, some vendors are charging up to Rs800, ignoring the official price list issued by the local administration, which sets the rate at Rs535 per kilo.
Residents, who often use lemons for summer drinks like lemonade, Limca, and shikanjabeen, are shocked by the sudden price hike.
“My kids want shikanjabeen in this heat, but at this rate, I can’t afford lemons anymore,” said one frustrated customer.
Shopkeepers argue that the rise in price is due to a hike in wholesale rates.
“We’re buying lemons at Rs800 from the wholesale market. How can we sell them cheaper?” a shopkeeper asked.
Citizens have called on the local administration to take immediate action to control the prices and prevent vendors from exploiting the public during the summer season.
