NEW YORK — In heartbreaking news shared on Friday’s episode of the “Today” show, co-host Sheinelle Jones’ husband, Uche Ojeh, has passed away at the age of 45 after a long battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
NBC anchors Savannah Guthrie, Craig Melvin, and Al Roker tearfully delivered the announcement, expressing deep sorrow for their colleague and friend, who has been absent from the show since December 2024.
“With profound sadness, we share this morning that Uche Ojeh has passed away after a courageous battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer called glioblastoma,” Guthrie said on air, visibly emotional.
A Loving Husband and Father
Uche Ojeh, described as a private, funny, and humble man, was deeply loved by the “Today” show family. He and Sheinelle Jones married in 2007 after meeting at Northwestern University. The couple shared three children: 15-year-old son Kayin, and 12-year-old twins, Clara and Uche Jr.
Craig Melvin, holding back tears, spoke of Ojeh’s devotion to his family. “He loved those kids more than anything else,” Melvin said. Al Roker added, “He was a private guy, but wickedly funny and incredibly humble.”
A Quiet Battle, A Public Loss
While Jones kept details of her absence private at first, she later revealed via Instagram in January that she was facing a “family health matter.” At the time, fans and colleagues rallied around her with messages of support.
“It’s not lost on me how lucky I am to have not only the support of my ‘Today’ show family but also to have you,” she shared with her followers.
A source later confirmed to People that the situation was very serious, and Jones was taking time off to be with her family through a difficult time.
Today Show Family Offers Support
Over the past few months, co-hosts like Craig Melvin, Dylan Dreyer, and Al Roker have remained in close contact with Jones. They’ve offered prayers and support both on and off-air.
“We talk to her all the time,” Melvin told Access Hollywood in April. “She’s taking time to be with her family.”
Remembering Uche Ojeh
Multiple sources told Page Six that Ojeh fought bravely against the disease. His passing has deeply affected not only his family but also the tight-knit Today show team.
“Sheinelle appreciates the support she’s received from fans and viewers in her absence,” an insider shared.
