Punjab Launches Free Vehicle Emission Testing in Lahore to Fight Smog

24 May, 2025 13:03

LAHORE – In a major step to combat air pollution, the Punjab government has started a free vehicle emission testing service in Lahore. The service is being offered by the Environment Protection Department (EPD) at eight different locations in the city.

This new initiative started in response to the worsening air quality and smog problems that plague Lahore, especially during the winter months. The goal is to encourage citizens to get their vehicles checked and reduce harmful emissions in the air.

Where to Get Your Vehicle Tested

You can visit any of the following emission testing points in Lahore:

  • Kahna – Patwaar Khana, LDA Road, Gajjumata

  • DHA – Near Packages Mall

  • Gulberg – Liberty Gol Chakkar

  • Mall Road – Istanbul Chowk, Town Hall Parking

  • Shahdara – Rescue 1122 Office, GT Road

  • Wahga Town – Police Station Manawan, GT Road

  • Lake City – Al-Kabir Town, Raiwind Road

  • Johar Town – Emporium Mall

  • Wapda Town – Evercare Hospital

These centres will provide free emission tests for one month.

New Timings Announced

Due to changing weather conditions, the EPA has updated the testing schedule. Most centres will now operate in two shifts:

  • Morning Shift: 7:30 AM – 12:30 PM

  • Evening Shift: 5:00 PM – 10:30 PM

The Bahria Town centre will have separate hours:

  • 4:00 PM – 9:30 PM

Special Emission Drive for Parliamentarians

This week, the EPA began testing vehicles of Punjab Assembly members. On clearing the test, vehicles were given green stickers to show they are emission-safe. Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Ahmed Khan also got his car tested and received a sticker to promote the campaign.

On the first day, over 150 MPA vehicles were tested. Officials say if a vehicle fails, the owner will be given seven days to fix the issue and return for re-testing.

Over 11,000 Vehicles Checked So Far

EPA Director General Dr. Imran Hamid Sheikh shared that more than 11,000 vehicles have already been tested since the campaign launched on April 17. He added that this effort will soon expand to other cities in Punjab.
