Virat Kohli’s restaurant chain, One8 Commune, has landed in legal trouble once more—this time for violating public health regulations in Bengaluru. The issue revolves around a lack of compliance with anti-smoking laws.
On May 29, Bengaluru Police conducted a routine inspection at the One8 Commune outlet in the city. During the check, authorities found that the restaurant did not have a designated smoking area, a requirement under the COTPA Act (Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act). According to the law, all public spaces must provide a clearly marked smoking zone.
Initially, police filed a non-cognizable report (NCR). However, with court approval, a formal FIR was later registered. The restaurant’s manager and staff have been named in the case.
Although Virat Kohli has not been named in the FIR, public and media attention remains firmly on him. The cricketer has yet to release any statement, and the continued silence has fueled speculation and debate.
This is not the first time the Bengaluru branch of One8 Commune has faced issues. In July 2024, it was under scrutiny for operating beyond permitted hours, following noise complaints from local residents. That incident led to police action and a formal warning.
Again in December 2024, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) sent a notice to the restaurant, citing a lack of a valid fire safety No Objection Certificate (NOC). The outlet was accused of running without meeting essential safety regulations.
Controversies aren’t limited to Bengaluru. In 2023, the Mumbai branch faced backlash when a Tamil Nadu man alleged he was denied entry for wearing a traditional veshti. The incident sparked widespread criticism over cultural insensitivity.
The recent FIR adds to the growing list of issues surrounding the restaurant brand. Though the legal action names only the manager and staff, many believe Kohli, as the celebrity face of the chain, should address the matter publicly.
So far, no official comment has been made. With pressure mounting, observers expect a response soon, highlighting the accountability that comes with celebrity-owned ventures.
