A deadly Russian assault has struck the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, claiming the lives of at least three civilians and leaving several others injured, according to Ukraine’s emergency services. The attack occurred when a shell landed on a residential street.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the attack was carried out using a Russian Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS).
“The Russians brutally hit Sumy,” Zelensky said in a Telegram post.
“Just around the city, along ordinary streets—from rocket artillery. An absolutely deliberate strike on civilians. A rescue operation is currently underway.”
Zelensky also revealed that an unexploded MLRS shell had “pierced the wall of a room in an ordinary apartment on the 9th floor.”
In a separate incident, regional officials reported that a hypersonic Kinzhal missile launched by Russia hit the city of Mykolaiv, though no casualties were reported.
Meanwhile, Russia has claimed that Ukraine has launched drone strikes targeting its civilian areas in recent days, which they say resulted in multiple deaths.
On the diplomatic front, both nations participated in brief direct talks in Istanbul on Monday. While they agreed on a further exchange of prisoners, there was no notable advancement toward a broader ceasefire.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump isued a strong statement, warning that he will abandon any peace-brokering efforts between the two nations unless they soon reach an agreement.
In a significant military development, Ukraine reportedly launched “Operation Spiderweb” on Saturday, targeting and destroying numerous Russian strategic bombers inside Russian territory using drones. The operation was dubbed “Russia’s Pearl Harbor” by analysts, who now expect a forceful retaliation from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
