Lauren Baird Jailed After Dragging Two Police Officers During Attempted Escape in Scotland

03 June, 2025 20:22

Lauren Baird, 43, has been jailed for 18 months after dragging two police officers along a road while trying to escape arrest in a terrifying late-night incident in the Scottish Highlands.

What Happened?

On the night of July 10, 2023, police stopped Baird on the B9152 road near Kincraig and Rothiemurchus after discovering her vehicle was not licensed. When challenged about false information she gave, Baird panicked and suddenly drove off — with two officers still partially inside the vehicle.

Dashcam footage shown in court captured the horrifying moment:

  • One officer managed to let go after being dragged just a few feet.

  • The second officer was pulled along for several yards, sustaining serious injuries and has not yet returned to duty.

She was eventually found at the Coylumbridge Hotel, and her car was discovered hidden in a nearby forest road.

Charges and Conviction

Baird previously pleaded guilty to:

  • Culpable and reckless conduct to the danger of life

  • Attempting to pervert the course of justice (by giving false details and showing a fake photo)

  • Attempting to conceal her vehicle

  • Driving without a licence or insurance

Drugs charges were dropped.

Court’s Remarks

Sheriff Sara Matheson described Baird’s actions as “appalling”, adding: “This put two officers’ lives in danger. It was pure luck their injuries weren’t more severe. The psychological impact has been significant.”

Baird, tearful during sentencing, was also banned from driving for 43 months.

Defence Statement

Her lawyer, Natalie Paterson, said Baird panicked when she was stopped and didn’t fully understand the gravity of her actions until later.

“She regrets her actions deeply.”

Injuries Reported

  • Grazes and bruises

  • Head swelling

  • Injured knee

  • Staved finger

Both officers were taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness for treatment.
