WARRINGTON – Friday, June 13, 2025: A major section of the M62 motorway near Warrington, Cheshire has been closed in both directions following a serious lorry crash in the early hours of Friday morning.

Crash at Junction 9 Causes Fuel Spill

According to Cheshire Police, the crash occurred at around 3:00am at junction nine (Winwick Road). A lorry struck the bridge railings, leading to a large diesel spillage on both sides of the motorway.

Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, but the damage caused by the crash has forced authorities to close the entire stretch of road between Manchester and Merseyside.

National Highways and Emergency Response

National Highways confirmed that contractors and emergency services are currently working at the scene to clean up the diesel and ensure the motorway is safe to reopen. The clean-up is expected to take several more hours.

Traffic cameras show long queues building up on both carriageways. Motorists are being diverted via the entry and exit slip roads at the junction.

Travel Delays and Advice

Drivers are being warned of significant delays of around 45 minutes, especially during the morning rush hour. Commuters traveling between Liverpool, Warrington, and Manchester are being urged to plan alternative routes.

A police spokesperson said, “The M62 is currently closed in both directions. A diversion is in place. Please avoid the area and allow extra time for your journey.”
