WhatsApp to Add Built-In Document Scanner for Android Users in Upcoming Update

16 June, 2025 15:17

California, June 17, 2025: WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a native document scanning feature for Android users, according to its latest beta version 2.25.18.29 released through the Google Play Beta Program. The feature is still in development and expected to launch officially in a future update.

This tool will allow users to scan documents directly within the app — eliminating the need for third-party apps like CamScanner or Adobe Scan. The same feature was introduced earlier this year for iOS.

Scan Documents Inside WhatsApp

With this new update, WhatsApp is introducing a “Scan Document” option within the file-sharing menu. Once selected, the feature activates the phone’s camera with two capture modes:

  • Manual Mode: Gives full control over when the photo is taken, useful for accurate framing.

  • Automatic Mode: Detects the document’s edges and captures the image automatically — ideal for quick scans.

Auto-Convert to PDF with Privacy in Focus

After capturing the image, WhatsApp automatically converts it to PDF, ready to be shared in any chat or group. The scanning process relies on native Android APIs, meaning all operations happen locally on the device.

All shared documents remain protected under WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption, and files are only sent when users manually choose to share them.

Benefits for Android Users

  • No need for separate scanner apps

  • Faster sharing of official paperwork, IDs, or forms

  • PDF formatting ensures compatibility across devices

  • Increased user privacy with local processing and encryption

The feature is not yet available to the general public but is expected to roll out in upcoming stable updates.
