Lewotobi Volcano Erupts in Indonesia, Forcing Emergency Evacuations

On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, the Lewotobi volcano erupted on Flores Island, Indonesia. The volcano sent thick clouds of fiery ash into the sky. Hundreds of people living nearby were evacuated for their safety.

The eruption happened in East Nusa Tenggara province. The Lewotobi volcano has two peaks—Lewotobi Laki-laki (the male) and Lewotobi Perempuan (the female). Both cones make up the volcano system. The area has shown signs of increased volcanic activity since late 2023.

Local officials confirmed that ash fell over nearby villages. The sky turned grey as the eruption continued. Emergency teams helped move people from danger zones. Many were taken to safe shelters in nearby towns.

Residents were warned not to go near the mountain. The danger zone extends several kilometers around the volcano. Flights in the area were also affected due to the thick ash in the sky.
