The emergency services in Castilla and Leon confirmed the crash. They said the car caught fire, and two people died at the scene. The Portuguese Football Federation quickly confirmed the deaths of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva.
Pedro Proenca, head of the Portuguese Football Federation, expressed deep sadness. He called Jota an extraordinary person and a great football player. Proenca said that both Jota and Silva were huge losses to Portuguese football.
Jota had nearly 50 appearances for Portugal’s national team. He was well-loved by teammates and fans. He recently celebrated winning the Premier League with Liverpool and the Nations League with Portugal.
In May, Jota shared pictures on Instagram of the Premier League trophy celebration. He was seen with his wife and children on the pitch. His message said, “No 20. Meant to be. #YNWA.”
Before the accident, Rute Cardoso shared a sweet post about their wedding. Jota replied, “But I’m the lucky one.” Now, those words carry a deep meaning.
This tragic loss has brought sadness to football fans worldwide. The Portuguese Football Federation has asked UEFA to hold a minute of silence in honor of the two players before Portugal’s women’s European Championship match against Spain.
