Tragic Shooting Claims Life of College Football Player Mycheal Edwards-Wallace at 18

Over the weekend, tragedy struck the football community when Mycheal Edwards-Wallace, an 18-year-old freshman set to start his college football career, was fatally shot. The incident occurred Sunday night at an apartment complex in Kingstree, South Carolina.

Edwards-Wallace had just signed to play football at Newberry College, a Division II school in Newberry, South Carolina. The shooting left four people wounded, including one other fatality and two people injured, according to reports from Live 5 News WCSC.

Newberry College head coach Todd Knight expressed his sadness, saying, “Our hearts go out to his family. It’s such a tragedy for a talented young man to be taken so early. Mycheal was a great student, a wonderful person with a bright future. We were very excited to have him join our team. He will always be a part of our Newberry family.”

Mycheal was a standout athlete in high school. At Kingstree High School, he earned all-state, all-area, and all-region honors while playing on both the offensive and defensive lines. He was also named the school’s Male Athlete of the Year. He had been selected to participate in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, an event showcasing top football players from North and South Carolina.

The community has been deeply affected by this loss. Newberry College released a statement saying, “We mourn the loss of incoming football student-athlete Mycheal Edwards-Wallace. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and teammates. We are holding them in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”

The shooting happened just over two months before Newberry’s football team was set to begin its season on September 6 against UVA Wise. As of Monday afternoon, police had made no arrests and had no updates on the condition of the two injured victims.
