‘Mini-Tsunami’ Injures 8 on Spanish Beach as Wave Hits in Terrifying Scene

A terrifying moment unfolded on a beach in Costa de la Luz, southern Spain, when a massive wave—described by witnesses as a “mini-tsunami”—swept through the shoreline, injuring eight people and sparking panic.

The freak wave crashed into Las Maravillas beach in Huelva province around 4:00 PM, dragging swimmers and paddleboarders into rocks.

What Caused the Giant Wave?

Authorities say the wave was likely caused by a 60,000-tonne cargo ship passing too close to the coast. Its movements may have sucked in seawater and expelled it violently, creating the powerful surge.

One witness said: “It looked like a tsunami. The wave sucked in the sea and then hit with massive force.”

Injuries and Eyewitness Reports

One of the injured, 28-year-old Rocio, spoke from her hospital bed.
She said: “I was coming out of the water with my paddle board. The wave hit me from the side and threw me down. I got stuck under the board.”

Rocio suffered a broken foot and is now waiting for surgery and a long recovery. She added: “It’s the worst thing to happen at the start of summer.”

Others suffered bruises and scrapes, with one more person taken to the hospital. Videos online show umbrellas flying, rocks hit, and people screaming and running for safety.

Local Authorities Respond

The harbour master’s office has now set a new speed limit of 11.5 knots for ships in the area to prevent similar incidents. Officials are also investigating whether the cargo ship broke any distance or speed rules near the beach.
