Sugar Prices Continue to Rise Across Pakistan

09 July, 2025 15:35

Sugar prices have witnessed another sharp surge across Pakistan, reaching up to Rs200 per kg in major cities, according to media reports on Wednesday.

Price Hike Across Cities

In Karachi, sugar has increased by Rs8 in a week. Retail prices now stand at Rs190 per kg, while wholesale rates are around Rs180 per kg, with a 50 kg sack priced at Rs9,000.

In Peshawar, retail prices are also Rs190 per kg, with similar wholesale rates. Meanwhile, Lahore has seen sugar being sold between Rs190 to Rs200 per kg. Reports state that several shopkeepers in Lahore have halted sugar sales due to recent administrative crackdowns.

In Quetta, the situation is similar—retail prices have touched Rs190 per kg, and wholesale prices remain around Rs180.

Warning From Traders

Earlier, Wholesale Groceries Association Chairman Abdul Rauf Ibrahim had warned the public and authorities about the rising prices.
“If immediate action is not taken against the sugar mafia, prices will cross Rs 200 per kg,” he stated.

Despite the spike in rates, he claimed there is no actual shortage of sugar in the market.
“This artificial price hike is not due to shortage but due to unchecked exploitation,” he said, urging authorities to crack down on hoarders and profiteers.

He emphasized the need for urgent regulatory action to protect consumers from the burden of inflated costs.
