YouTube to ban monetization for AI-generated content
YouTube to ban monetization for AI-generated content from July 15
YouTube is planning to tighten its monetization rules for creators who upload AI-generated or mass-produced content. The new policy will come into effect on July 15, 2025, as part of the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) updates.
In a video update, YouTube’s Head of Editorial & Creator Liaison, Rene Ritchie, said this is a “minor update” to existing rules. The aim is to better detect videos that are repetitive, low-quality, or made with little human effort.
Generative AI tools have made it easy to create realistic videos, but this has also led to a flood of low-effort and sometimes misleading content on the platform. Advertisers and viewers have raised concerns about misinformation, copyright violations, and brand safety risks.
Under the revised rules, AI-generated videos are defined as those where most visuals or audio are created by artificial intelligence, with minimal human input. This includes:
Fully AI-animated or deepfake videos
AI-generated voiceovers or music
Synthetic news reports, interviews, or fictional characters
Creators who rely heavily on such content may face restrictions or lose their eligibility for monetization under YPP.
