Public holiday on 19 july? Pakistan-wide shutter-down strike on July 19

The business community across Pakistan is preparing for a nationwide shutter-down strike on Saturday, July 19, 2025. However, it is important to note that this is not a public holiday, and no official notification has been issued by the government to declare it one.

The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) and the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) have strongly confirmed that the strike will go ahead as scheduled.

Businesses to Shut, But No Government Holiday

Saqib Nisar, Senior Vice President of FPCCI, said that consultations are still happening with traders. However, he stressed that the strike call remains firm for now.

Javed Bilwani, President of KCCI, rejected all rumors about any postponement. He said the decision was taken after talking with major trade bodies from all four provinces.

Bilwani added that all preparations for the protest are complete. If there are any changes in plans, they will be announced only after joint discussions with other chambers.

He also warned against fake news being spread online and clarified that those behind the rumors have no connection to the protest movement.

Why the Strike Is Happening

The protest is a response to recent tax reforms that have added financial pressure on traders. Many believe that the new taxes are unfair, and this strike is a way for the business community to show its dissatisfaction.
