Glacier Melt in GB Could Cause Food Crisis: Says Opposition Leader Kazim Mesam
Opposition Leader Kazim Mesam Glacier
Skardu – Gilgit-Baltistan Opposition Leader Kazim Mesam has raised alarm over the severe impact of climate change on the region, calling it the most affected area in Pakistan. In an interview with local media, he said that GB’s glaciers, which serve as Pakistan’s water towers, are under serious threat.
He criticized the federal government, stating that climate change in Gilgit-Baltistan has never been a priority. Despite having the largest flood management portfolio, no major projects have been initiated in GB to protect the environment or prevent floods.
Mesam warned that the melting of glaciers, riverbank erosion, and flash floods in GB are causing national damage. He highlighted that 80% of Punjab’s irrigation depends on the Indus River, which originates from GB glaciers. If the glacier melt is not controlled, it could lead to severe food security issues and turn Punjab’s fertile land barren.
He urged the federal government to take immediate steps to stop deforestation in GB and provide alternative fuel sources to protect the forests.
Speaking on recent floods, he demanded the formation of a high-level committee to support affected communities. He also highlighted the dire state of the GB Disaster Management Authority and the local rescue department, which are struggling with financial crises. Mesam called for urgent federal funding and immediate compensation for flood victims to ensure their recovery.
