US Exit from UNESCO Not a Responsible Action for a Major Country to Take: China
On Wednesday, China expressed regret over the United States’ decision to withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated, “This is not the action that a responsible major country should take.” He added that “China has always firmly supported the work of UNESCO.”
The US announced on Tuesday its intention to leave UNESCO, an agency best known for designating world heritage sites. The US cited concerns that UNESCO was biased against Israel and promoted “divisive” causes as reasons for the withdrawal.
Previously, former President Donald Trump ordered the withdrawal from UNESCO in 2017 during his first term, but President Joe Biden later reinstated US membership. The latest withdrawal is scheduled to take effect in December 2026.
