Who is Hayden Buchanan? Gerringong Teen to Make First-Grade Debut
The Gerringong Lions’ influence on the NRL continues to grow, with 19-year-old Hayden Buchanan set to make his debut for St George Illawarra in Saturday’s derby clash against Cronulla at Kogarah.
Buchanan has been promoted to the starting lineup by coach Shane Flanagan after Mat Feagai was sidelined with a groin injury. The talented Steelers junior follows in the footsteps of fellow Gerringong products Dylan Egan and Hamish Stewart, who also made their first-grade debuts earlier this year.
His selection comes after an impressive Knock-On Effect NSW Cup season, which earned him a spot among the reserves in last week’s victory over Canberra. That performance, combined with his consistent form, convinced Flanagan to give him an opportunity on the big stage.
While Egan’s season was cut short by an ACL injury in May, Stewart will also line up against the Sharks. Meanwhile, Ashton Ward, another Gerringong talent, has already made three appearances for South Sydney. Buchanan’s debut makes him the eighth player from Gerringong to reach first grade this year, joining names like Tyran Wishart, Jackson Ford, Reuben Garrick, and Kyle McCarthy.
The Dragons also shared more good news this week, announcing that Flanagan has extended his contract until the end of 2028. “Shane has played a critical role in setting the foundation for where this club is heading,” said CEO Tim Watsford. “He’s re-instilled belief in our playing group, coaches and supporters together with reiterating the privilege of wearing the Red V.”
