Iran FM Condemns New US Sanctions, Says Washington Failed to Achieve Its Goals

TEHRAN: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has strongly criticised Washington’s decision to impose further sanctions on Iran, saying the United States has turned to additional economic pressure after failing to achieve its objectives through war and previous sanctions.

Araghchi said Washington had found what he called an unusual solution to its inability to achieve its goals: imposing even more sanctions on Iran.

The Iranian foreign minister argued that the outcome of the conflict had been damaging for the United States and said Washington had pursued military confrontation with Iran after decades of sanctions, which Tehran says were imposed largely in support of Israel.

Araghchi said the latest conflict had failed to deliver the results sought by Washington and had instead created serious political and strategic costs for the United States.

He also argued that the war had damaged America’s international reputation, particularly amid growing criticism over its military actions and economic pressure against Iran.

According to Araghchi, the continuation of sanctions after years of economic restrictions demonstrates Washington’s inability to achieve its political objectives through pressure alone.

The latest remarks came after renewed US sanctions targeting Iran and amid an ongoing campaign to restrict Tehran’s access to international financial resources.

US State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said Washington would not back away from its efforts to cut off Iran’s financial resources.

He said the United States would continue its economic campaign against Iran and maintain pressure on Tehran.

Iran has repeatedly argued that sanctions and military pressure cannot force the country to abandon its national interests or security policies.

Araghchi’s latest statement reflects Tehran’s continued rejection of the US strategy of combining military pressure with economic restrictions.

The dispute over sanctions is likely to remain a major obstacle to any future diplomatic engagement, particularly as Washington signals that it intends to maintain economic pressure while Tehran continues to reject what it considers coercive measures.
