Who Is Giovanni Leoni? Young Reds Star Attracting Europe’s Top Scouts

13 August, 2025 18:08

On the eve of the Serie A season, Parma are showcasing one of Italy’s brightest young prospects — 18-year-old centre-back Giovanni Leoni — who has already drawn attention from major European sides including Liverpool, Inter Milan, and AC Milan.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Liverpool have submitted a direct enquiry for Leoni, while both Milan clubs remain in the race. Valued at around €35 million (£31 million), the towering 1.96m defender is admired by Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri, who views him as a perfect fit for his backline. Known for his aerial dominance, physical power, and intelligent reading of the game, Leoni consistently outwits seasoned attackers.

Former Sampdoria assistant coach Roberto Baronio praised his tactical awareness, noting: “When you have above-average intelligence, you go further. Leoni can read opponents’ intentions early — a trait usually seen only in experienced players who know their opponents well. His subtle use of positioning and anticipation makes him stand out.”

Milan’s pursuit may hinge on transfer movements, with Newcastle’s reported interest in Malick Thiaw potentially opening the door for a move. Inter’s approach, however, is more cautious due to Parma’s valuation, as they currently prioritise Ademola Lookman’s €50 million (£44 million) transfer from Atalanta.

Born in Italy to water polo athletes, Leoni grew up a Roma fan before joining Cittadella’s youth ranks in 2015. He debuted professionally with Padova in 2019 and made history at 16 years and three months as the youngest debutant in Italy’s 2022–23 Serie C season.

“I was lucky to play at a higher level early and learned a lot from defenders and coaches like Beppe Agostini, who taught me not just football but life,” Leoni said.

Following spells with Padova and a loan to Sampdoria under Andrea Pirlo, Parma secured his signature in 2023–24 for €5 million (£4.4m) plus bonuses. By the end of the season, he had cemented his place in Christian Chivu’s starting XI — and his name firmly on Europe’s radar.
