Braldo Locals Stage Sit-In, Block K2 Trek Over Road Damage, Power Outages

17 August, 2025 18:44

The people of Askole and the surrounding Braldo valleys, located near the world-famous peaks of K2, Gasherbrum, and Baltoro Glacier, have started an official sit-in protest demanding urgent government action on their basic needs.

Arif Hussain Askole, a young local from Braldo valley, is speaking out as a key voice of the protestors. He explained that the main K2 trekking route, which is the only path to reach the second highest mountain, is severely damaged in three places.

He also highlighted that the area has been suffering from frequent power outages for weeks, yet no one has explained the problem or taken responsibility. Furthermore, he pointed out that floods have destroyed the only road connecting the villages of Korphay and Sino, cutting them off from nearby valleys and putting people at risk during emergencies.

Arif Hussain stressed that these are serious issues causing outright injustice to the local people. He made it clear that until the authorities address their demands, the sit-in protest will continue, and no tourists or vehicles will be allowed to travel toward K2.

The protesters are also carrying play cards with slogans like “Be ashamed, be loyal to Braldo,” showing their strong feelings and determination.

The community demands immediate repair and restoration of the K2 trek route, a permanent and reliable electricity supply, and reconstruction of the damaged road between Korphay and Sino villages. They are calling on the government to take responsibility and act swiftly.

This protest highlights a critical issue that affects not only the local people but also Pakistan’s adventure tourism and economy. The people of Braldo and Skoli remain united and determined to fight for their rights, with Arif Hussain Askole representing their urgent call for justice and action.
