PTI Propaganda on Service Chiefs’ Retirement Debunked
Islamabad – In recent days, some Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) commentators have raised questions regarding the tenure of the country’s service chiefs, suggesting that the Army Chief may retire in November after completing three years. These claims have caused unnecessary debate on social media, particularly on PTI-affiliated platforms.
However, the facts are clear. On November 4, 2024, the government legally extended the tenure of all service chiefs from three years to five years. This was done through proper constitutional and legislative procedures, with amendments made to the Army Act and other relevant service acts. The move was aimed at ensuring continuity in policies and allowing senior leadership sufficient time to implement reforms.
At the time, national media outlets and analysts widely discussed the decision, noting that a five-year tenure would bring stability and positive change within the armed forces. An example of this policy is the current Air Chief, who is now serving in the fourth year of his extended tenure under the new system.
Despite these clear legal amendments, PTI analysts continue to spread confusion and misinformation, attempting to question the validity of the service chiefs’ extended terms. Observers believe this is part of a larger propaganda campaign by PTI to divert attention from the party’s internal political challenges.
The reality remains that the five-year tenure for service chiefs is fully legal, constitutional, and already in practice. Any claims to the contrary are based on political motives rather than facts.
