Why Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza Was Arrested Under MPO? What Really Happened?

JHELUM: Pakistani religious scholar Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza has been arrested in Jhelum under administrative orders, officials confirmed on Monday.

Authorities stated that Mirza was detained under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) on the directives of the Jhelum deputy commissioner. The MPO law permits detention for up to three months as a preventive measure to maintain public peace.

Reason Behind the Arrest

Renowned anchor Ajmal Jami disclosed that Mirza, in a recent video, discussed the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and claimed that the Prophet (PBUH) was referenced in Christianity.

Following this, a fatwa issued by Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) leader Muhammad Asif Ashraf Jalali went viral on social media, declaring Mirza’s remarks as blasphemous.

In response, Christian scholar Tommy William rejected Mirza’s interpretation, clarifying that Christianity does not contain any such reference to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Reactions

Commenting on the situation, Ajmal Jami said that the imposition of Section 3 of the MPO was the correct step, as Mirza’s statements had the potential to spark public unrest. He added that several religious leaders have already called for legal action against the scholar.
