Who is Shubham Shabar? Odisha Boy Who Worked as Migrant Labour Cracks NEET

27 August, 2025 12:45

Life changed in a single phone call for Shubham Shabar, a 19-year-old boy from Mudulidiah village in Khordha district, Odisha. While working as a janitor in Bengaluru, earning just Rs 15,000 per month, Shubham received the news that he had cleared NEET-UG 2025 with an impressive all-India rank of 4,000.

The call left him speechless. With a broom in hand and sweat on his forehead, he froze when the caller said, “You have cleared NEET with a good rank.” Shubham finished his shift with a smile and immediately began planning to return home.

A Journey from Poverty to Success

Shubham belongs to a poor family. His parents, Sahadev and Rangi Shabar, survive by farming a small patch of land. Despite poverty, they ensured their only son received proper education. He studied at a local school in Niladriprasad and later joined BJB College in Bhubaneswar for Plus Two.

His parents struggled with finances but never compromised on his education. “We always believed education could change his life and ours,” said his mother, holding back tears.

Inspiration to Become a Doctor

Initially, Shubham wanted to join the police. But his teacher, Basudev Maharana from Berhampur, encouraged him to attempt NEET and pursue medicine. That advice changed his direction.

However, uncertainty about results and financial struggles pushed him to Bengaluru to work as a migrant labourer. “I thought at least I could support my family until results came. I did not know if I could afford higher studies,” Shubham recalled.

NEET Success and Admission

Shubham cracked NEET 2025 with an all-India rank of 4,000. He secured admission to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur, one of South Odisha’s top medical institutions.

The news brought joy and tears to his family. “We work hard in the fields, but we never let him feel the burden. He was always sincere and determined. We knew he would achieve something big,” said his proud mother.

His father added, “Money was always a problem, but we never allowed it to break his dream.”

A New Responsibility

Now admitted to MKCG Berhampur, Shubham is determined to succeed. “I have a bigger responsibility now. I must complete my course and serve people. I will also take care of my parents. The path is hard, but I will overcome,” he said with confidence.
