Hyundai-LG EV Battery Plant in Georgia Faces Diplomatic Tensions After ICE Raid

The Hyundai-LG EV battery plant in Georgia has become the center of a diplomatic row after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained hundreds of South Korean workers over alleged visa violations.

According to the BBC, ICE confirmed the arrest of 475 individuals, most of them South Korean nationals, accused of working on short-term visitor visas that do not allow employment in the U.S. The detainees are currently being held at an ICE facility in Folkston, Georgia, as authorities determine the next course of action.

In response, the South Korean government dispatched diplomats to Georgia and convened an emergency meeting in Seoul. Foreign Minister Cho Hyun expressed concerns for the detained citizens and urged Washington to ensure the rights of Korean workers and safeguard business activities of Korean companies.

Hyundai Motor stated that none of those detained were its direct employees. Its joint venture partner, LG Energy Solution, emphasized that worker safety is its top priority and pledged full cooperation with U.S. officials.

ICE also revealed that a Mexican national and a U.S. green card holder with past convictions for narcotics and firearms were among those arrested. Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent Steven Schrank defended the operation, stressing, “foreign workers must be brought in legally” and warning that companies undermining the U.S. workforce would face accountability.

The $1,200-employee facility, described as the largest economic development project in Georgia’s history, plays a vital role in U.S. electric vehicle production plans. However, the raid underscores the growing tension between foreign investment and strict immigration enforcement.
