Who is Balendra Shah? The Frontrunner for Nepal PM Post After KP Sharma Oli’s Resignation
On September 8, 2025, Nepal’s political landscape shifted dramatically. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned after days of violent protests rocked the country. Demonstrators, mostly from the younger generation, clashed with police in what is being called the “Gen Z protests.”
The unrest turned deadly when security forces opened fire on crowds outside Parliament, leaving 19 protesters dead. In a move of moral accountability, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak also resigned. Despite a strict curfew, angry demonstrators set fire to the homes of top leaders, including Oli.
With Oli’s sudden exit, attention has turned toward Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen, who has quickly emerged as the frontrunner to replace him.
Who is Balendra Shah?
Balendra Shah is not a typical politician. At 34, he has worn many hats—civil engineer, rapper, activist, and now the mayor of Kathmandu. His unique journey resonates strongly with Nepal’s younger population, who see him as a symbol of hope and change.
Early Career
Before entering politics, Balen earned recognition as a rapper and performer. His music often touched on social issues, giving him a natural platform to connect with young people. At the same time, he pursued a career in civil engineering, balancing creativity with professional expertise.
Political Rise
In 2022, Balen won the mayoral election in Kathmandu as an independent candidate. His victory shocked the traditional political establishment and inspired other outsiders to contest elections. Many saw him as the face of a new political wave in Nepal.
His win also gave momentum to the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), led by Rabi Lamichhane, which went on to secure 21 seats in the Lower House of Parliament. This marked a major breakthrough for independents and reformist voices in Nepal’s political system.
Why He Matters Now
For many Nepalis—especially those under 28—Balen represents the possibility of a different kind of leadership. He blends activism with practical governance experience, and unlike traditional party leaders, he appeals to a broad, youthful base.
However, critics question whether independent leaders like him can handle the complex demands of running a national government. Balancing expectations of rapid change with political realities will be his biggest challenge if he steps into the prime minister’s office.
