Who is Peter Mandelson? Know About His Relationship with Jeffrey Epstein

09 September, 2025 15:02

Peter Mandelson, one of Labour’s most influential political figures, is once again facing scrutiny over his links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The controversy resurfaced after documents released by the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform revealed a photograph and a handwritten note, apparently from Mandelson, describing Epstein as his “best pal.”

The revelations raise fresh questions about Mandelson’s judgment, especially as he now serves as the UK’s ambassador to the United States under Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership.

Peter Mandelson’s Political Career

Born into a family deeply rooted in Labour politics, Mandelson is the grandson of Herbert Morrison, a former Labour Home and Foreign Secretary. His early exposure to politics came at just 12 years old when he was invited to Downing Street by then-Prime Minister Harold Wilson.

  • Early Politics: Mandelson began his career in 1979 as a councillor in Lambeth. However, disillusioned with the hard-left council, he stepped down three years later.

  • Labour Communications Chief: In the mid-1980s, he became Labour’s Director of Communications under Neil Kinnock, helping to modernize the party’s image.

  • MP for Hartlepool: Mandelson entered Parliament in 1992, becoming MP for Hartlepool. He played a central role in Labour’s 1997 election landslide and was later appointed to senior cabinet roles, including Secretary of State for Trade and Industry.

  • European Commissioner: In 2004, he was appointed EU Trade Commissioner, before returning to the UK as Business Secretary under Gordon Brown in 2008.

  • Nicknamed ‘Prince of Darkness’: Mandelson earned this moniker for his political maneuvering and influence behind the scenes.

In 2024, Sir Keir Starmer appointed Mandelson as the first political figure in nearly 50 years to serve as the UK’s ambassador to Washington.

Mandelson’s Relationship With Jeffrey Epstein

Mandelson’s name has frequently been linked to Epstein, the disgraced financier who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking minors.

  • “Best Pal” Reference: In a birthday photo book created for Epstein by Ghislaine Maxwell, Mandelson appeared in a picture wearing a bathrobe, calling Epstein his “best pal” and adding: “Happy birthday, Jeffrey, we love you!!”

  • Close Ties: A JPMorgan Chase report described Mandelson and Epstein’s relationship as “particularly close,” with Epstein reportedly referring to him as “Petie.”

  • New York Stay: Reports suggest Mandelson stayed at Epstein’s New York home in 2009, while he was serving as Gordon Brown’s Business Secretary.

  • Dinner Party Introduction: Virginia Roberts, one of Epstein’s victims, has claimed she met Mandelson at a dinner hosted by Epstein in New York. She alleged they discussed business, though she said she was never asked to interact with Mandelson in the way Epstein exploited other women.

  • Birthday Note: Mandelson’s birthday poem described Epstein as a “sharp-witted” man with “interesting friends,” fueling speculation about the depth of their ties.

Mandelson’s Response

When questioned about his relationship with Epstein, Mandelson reacted angrily, calling it an “obsession.” He admitted he regretted ever meeting him, saying: “I regret ever being introduced to him by Ghislaine Maxwell. I regret even more the hurt he caused to many young women.”

Mandelson maintains he met Epstein only a handful of times and denies having knowledge of his crimes.

Why the Controversy Matters

The resurfacing of Mandelson’s ties to Epstein has caused political unease. As ambassador to Washington, he is tasked with navigating UK–US relations, including dealings with Donald Trump’s administration. Any association with Epstein, who was linked to powerful political and business figures worldwide, risks undermining his credibility.

Peter Mandelson remains one of the most influential and controversial figures in British politics. His long career has seen him shape Labour’s modern image and hold some of the highest offices in government. But his alleged closeness with Jeffrey Epstein continues to cast a shadow, raising questions about his judgment and connections at a time when he plays a critical diplomatic role.
