How Tariffs Could Increase the Price of iPhone 17?

09 September, 2025 18:03

Apple is preparing to launch the iPhone 17 series at its Cupertino headquarters this September 2025. While fans are excited about new models like the ultra-thin iPhone Air and Apple’s promised AI-powered Siri upgrade, another big concern is price. The cost of the iPhone 17 could rise because of President Donald Trump’s tariff policies on Chinese-made goods.

Why It Matters

The iPhone is Apple’s most valuable product. A change in its price impacts not only U.S. buyers but also the global smartphone market. This year’s event is the first iPhone launch under Trump’s second term. His administration has pushed for more U.S.-based tech manufacturing, adding pressure on Apple’s global supply chain.

Most iPhones are still built in China and India. Under the new tariff rules, iPhones shipped from China to the U.S. face a 25% import duty. Experts warn this could lead to Apple’s first major price hike in five years, with increases of $50 to $100 per model.

Apple’s Response

To reduce the effect, Apple CEO Tim Cook has expanded production in India. The company also shipped large batches of iPhones into the U.S. before the tariffs became active. Apple has promised over $600 billion in U.S. investments, hoping to build goodwill with the government.

Despite these moves, analysts say Apple may still have to raise prices. Dan Ives, head of technology research at Wedbush Securities, said the cost of making an iPhone entirely in the U.S. could reach $3,500. Others argue that American workers do not have the same large-scale skills required for Apple’s production line.

What Happens Next

Apple has kept its iPhone prices steady since 2020, starting at $800 for base models and $1,200 for high-end versions. If tariffs continue, those numbers may climb higher.

All eyes are now on Apple’s pricing announcement. Consumers want to know if the company will absorb the extra costs or pass them directly to buyers. Analysts also question whether Apple’s move to India can grow fast enough to avoid future price hikes in 2026 and beyond.
