Who is David Martínez? Doctor Turned Fighter Shaking Up the UFC in 2025

10 September, 2025 11:29

David Martínez is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about newcomers in the UFC this year. As part of a new wave of talent entering the Octagon in 2025, Martínez stands as a testament to the UFC’s commitment to discovering fighters with real potential—regardless of their background. His journey to the top isn’t just about athleticism; it’s about resilience, ambition, and a backstory that captures global attention.

He isn’t simply another name rising in the bantamweight division—Martínez brings a unique narrative that sets him apart from the rest. With his career gaining momentum, fans are left wondering: what truly makes David Martínez different?

Where is David Martínez From? Ethnicity & Nationality

David Martínez originates from Ecatepec de Morelos, located in the State of Mexico, and he currently resides in Mexico City. Representing the Mexican tricolor, the 27-year-old fighter trains out of Bonebreakers gym.

Like many in the sport, his initial reason for fighting was simple: “because I liked to fight.” While his religious beliefs remain private, considering Mexico’s Catholic majority, it’s reasonable to guess he may identify as Christian. Still, there’s more to Martínez’s life outside the cage—and one aspect, in particular, is both unexpected and fascinating.

David Martínez’s Background: A Life in Medicine

According to UFC.com, Martínez declared: “I am a doctor, and in the sport, I am a kickboxing world champion.” Outside of MMA, he’s a certified orthopedic surgeon. Speaking with MMA Junkie, the fighter—known as ‘Black Spartan’—shared that his days often begin at 7 a.m. at the hospital. On particularly demanding days, he’s stayed late, managing surgeries and outpatient cases.

After finishing his work as a doctor, Martínez heads to Bonebreakers to train. But juggling two of the most intense careers hasn’t been easy. At times, he’s had to choose between medicine and fighting. Reflecting on this, he admitted:
“I stopped the medicine career for a little time, because I want to put all my focus, all my time in this opportunity, because I know this opportunity is the biggest opportunity and the biggest league in the world.”

He understands the toll age takes on a fighter’s body—slower reflexes, higher injury risk, and longer recovery times. That’s why he chose to pause his medical career temporarily, acknowledging:
“For medicine, we have a lot of time. For this sport, it’s a very short career.”

David Martínez’s UFC and MMA Record

Martínez began his MMA career in 2016 at Xtreme Kombat. He went on to make waves in Combate Global, where he won the bantamweight championship twice and successfully defended the title once. In 2024, he made a major move by appearing on Dana White’s Contender Series, where he defeated Xavier Franklin via unanimous decision, earning himself a UFC contract.

Since then, Martínez has competed once in the UFC—against Saimon Oliveira—winning with a first-round KO using a counter straight right followed by ground strikes. The dominant victory earned him a Performance of the Night bonus at UFC Mexico City in March 2025. That win extended his record to 12 wins and 1 loss, including an eight-fight win streak.

Next Up: Rob Font at Noche UFC 2025

Martínez is now set to face Rob Font at Noche UFC 2025. Originally, he was scheduled to fight Raul Rosas Jr., but due to a rib injury, Rosas Jr. had to pull out. Font stepped in on short notice to replace him.

As the fight approaches in San Antonio this Saturday, the question remains—can the orthopedic surgeon bring his surgical precision to the Octagon once again? Fans will have to tune in on Fight Night to find out.
