Modi Faces Protests During First Visit to Manipur in Two Years
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Manipur on 13 September 2025 for the first time in two years, but his trip was met with anger and widespread protests. Authorities turned the region into what locals described as a “military camp,” with drones, curfews, and checkpoints set up across the state.
Despite tight security, public resentment was evident. Many residents called Modi’s visit a political drama ahead of elections rather than a genuine attempt to address Manipur’s issues. Citizens organized peaceful strikes and demonstrations, saying, “Modi remembered after two years that Manipur is also part of India.”
Students at Manipur University also protested inside the campus, chanting “Go Back Modi.” Locals rejected the BJP’s development promises, calling them nothing more than a vote-bank strategy.
Police cracked down on demonstrators, firing rubber bullets and tear gas. Dozens were injured, with several reported in critical condition. Hospitals were quickly overwhelmed with casualties.
To control the narrative, the government imposed restrictions on journalists and enforced a media blackout. Critics said this censorship only deepened public distrust.
The visit came as Manipur still struggles with the aftermath of the 2023 ethnic violence, which left deep scars on the community. The United Nations’ 2025 report has also criticized India for human rights abuses in the region, including forced displacement, attacks on minorities, and inhumane treatment.
