The hockey world is in shock after the sudden death of Orca Wiesblatt, a Canadian forward who passed away in a car accident in British Columbia over the weekend. He was only 25 years old.
The Allen Americans (ECHL), who had signed him last month, confirmed the news. They remembered him for his energy, toughness, and infectious smile.
The Wiesblatt Family’s Inspiring Story
The tragedy has once again brought attention to the remarkable journey of the Wiesblatt brothers, a family of hockey players from Calgary. Raised by their single mother, Kim, who is deaf, the four brothers—Ocean, Orca, Ozzy, and Oasiz—overcame financial struggles and personal challenges to pursue hockey careers.
Their story has inspired many because of the sacrifices and perseverance that helped them succeed.
Who Are the Wiesblatt Brothers?
Ocean Wiesblatt – The oldest, Ocean played junior hockey before joining the Athens Rock Lobsters and later the Danville Dashers.
Orca Wiesblatt – The second-oldest, Orca made his mark with the Calgary Hitmen (WHL) and then turned professional in 2024. Last season, he scored 42 points in 37 games for the Athens Rock Lobsters in the Federal Prospects Hockey League. He had just signed with the Allen Americans before his passing.
Ozzy Wiesblatt – The most well-known, Ozzy was selected in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft by the San Jose Sharks. He made his NHL debut last season.
Oasiz Wiesblatt – The youngest, Oasiz is currently playing with the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL) and continues to develop his career.
Alongside them is their sister, Oceania, and their mother, Kim, who held the family together despite difficult times.
A Childhood of Struggles and Sacrifice
Growing up, the Wiesblatt family faced many hardships. Their mother worked tirelessly while raising five children. The cost of hockey was high, with equipment, travel, and registration fees often out of reach.
The boys sometimes wore second-hand gear, slept in cars during tournaments, or depended on help from teammates’ families and the community. Despite these obstacles, they never gave up on their dream.
Tributes to Orca Wiesblatt
Orca’s playing style was known for being gritty and physical, which made him a fan favorite with the Calgary Hitmen. After news of his death, the Hitmen issued a heartfelt statement calling his passing “tragic” and saying they were “heartbroken.”
The Allen Americans’ head coach and GM Steve Martinson also paid tribute, saying:
“He wasn’t just skilled, he was a momentum-changing hitter. I can still see his grin when he would return to the bench after one of his big hits. That is what we will miss the most, his infectious smile.”
The Wiesblatt Legacy
The loss of Orca Wiesblatt is deeply felt across the hockey community. But the strength and determination of the Wiesblatt family remain an inspiration. Their journey shows how hardship, sacrifice, and resilience can build champions—on and off the ice.
