Who is Makeely Hoffman? Teenager Fighting for Life After Mackay Car Crash

17 September, 2025 11:22

On September 4, 2025, an 18-year-old girl named Makeely Hoffman was critically injured in a car accident in Mackay, north Queensland. She was a passenger in her then-boyfriend’s car when he lost control and slammed into a tree.

The young woman was trapped in the wreck and suffered life-threatening injuries. She was airlifted to Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital on a LifeFlight helicopter, nearly 1,000km from her home.

Severe Injuries and Long Road Ahead

Makeely’s injuries are extremely serious. She suffered:

  • Broken legs

  • A shattered pelvis

  • Collarbone fracture

  • Eye fracture causing blurred vision

  • Bruised liver

Doctors have already performed surgery to reconstruct her hip. She is bed-bound and unable to move without pain. Her mother, Katie Hoffman, said her daughter must now “learn to walk again.”

The teenager also struggles with flashbacks from the crash, which make it difficult for her to sleep. Her family fears her left leg may have long-term nerve damage, as doctors are working daily to keep the nerves active.

Family Struggles with Costs

Makeely’s family has spent hundreds of dollars on travel and accommodation to be near her during treatment in Brisbane. The uncertainty of her recovery adds more stress.

Her mother explained that each day brings new challenges. “She can’t even roll over in bed without agony,” Katie said. “It’s not just her body healing, but her mind too.”

A Bright Teen with Big Dreams

Before the crash, Makeely was a trainee phlebotomist. She also had a passion for Ford cars and motorbikes, especially her Yamaha. Despite being stuck in hospital, she keeps asking about her work and when she can return to her normal life.

Her family describes her as a “go-getter” who loves life. Friends have rallied around to show their support. “She’s a real sweetheart with a great group of friends,” her mother added.

Community Support and GoFundMe

Family friend Tanisha Hadley has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help cover medical and travel costs. The fundraiser explains that Makeely’s recovery will take months of surgery, rehabilitation, and therapy.

“Your kindness and generosity will make a real difference,” Tanisha wrote.

Police Investigation

Queensland Police are still investigating the crash. They have appealed for anyone with dashcam footage or information to contact Crime Stoppers.
